Cannabis-Friendly Travel Tips and Destinations for 2026

Cannabis-friendly travel tips for 2026: where recreational cannabis is legal, how medical patients can plan ahead, and why not to cross state lines with it.

Planning a getaway and wondering where cannabis fits in? Laws change fast and vary a lot from place to place, so the best cannabis-friendly trip starts with a little homework. Here are our tips for traveling smart, plus where adults can legally buy cannabis in the U.S. and abroad as of 2026.

Tips for Cannabis-Friendly Travel

  1. Check the law where you’re going. Cannabis rules differ by state and country: what you can buy, how much you can carry and where you can use it. Look up your destination’s official cannabis program before you go.
  2. Don’t carry cannabis across state lines or onto a plane. Even between two legal states, crossing a state line with cannabis is a federal offense, and airports fall under federal rules. Buy at your destination instead.
  3. Don’t bring it home to Ohio, either. Under Ohio’s Senate Bill 56, cannabis bought in another state is contraband once it crosses into Ohio. See what changed under SB 56.
  4. Know where you can use it. Most legal states ban public consumption, and many hotels and rentals ban smoking. Look for accommodations that explicitly welcome cannabis, or for licensed consumption lounges where they exist.
  5. Never drive impaired. Driving under the influence of cannabis is illegal everywhere, including in states where cannabis is legal.
  6. Try the local scene. Dispensary tours, farm visits and cannabis-friendly events are great ways to explore a new place’s cannabis culture.

Cannabis-Friendly Destinations

Denver, Colorado: one of the first legal markets, with plenty of dispensaries, tours and events.

Portland, Oregon: a vibrant cannabis culture with numerous dispensaries and cannabis-friendly accommodations.

Las Vegas, Nevada: large dispensaries and licensed consumption lounges.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada: cannabis is legal nationwide in Canada, and Vancouver pairs a long-standing cannabis culture with great scenery.

Amsterdam, Netherlands: famous for coffee shops where cannabis sales are tolerated under Dutch policy, though rules for public use are strict.

Barcelona, Spain: home to private cannabis social clubs that operate in a legal gray area; membership rules apply and tourists aren’t always admitted.

Can You Travel with Medical Cannabis?

Usually not across state lines, for the same federal reasons above. What you can do is plan to buy at your destination:

  • In a recreational state, any adult 21+ with a valid photo ID can buy from a licensed dispensary. No medical card is needed.
  • In a medical-only state, access for visitors varies. Some states accept out-of-state patient cards or offer temporary visiting-patient registration; many don’t. Check the state’s medical cannabis program website before you go, since these rules change often.

States with Recreational Cannabis (2026)

As of 2026, adults 21+ can legally buy and possess cannabis in 24 states plus Washington, D.C. (D.C. allows possession and gifting, but not retail sales):

  1. Alaska
  2. Arizona
  3. California
  4. Colorado
  5. Connecticut
  6. Delaware
  7. Illinois
  8. Maine
  9. Maryland
  10. Massachusetts
  11. Michigan
  12. Minnesota
  13. Missouri
  14. Montana
  15. Nevada
  16. New Jersey
  17. New Mexico
  18. New York
  19. Ohio
  20. Oregon
  21. Rhode Island
  22. Vermont
  23. Virginia (possession is legal; retail sales are scheduled to begin July 1, 2027)
  24. Washington

Several more states are considering legalization, so check for updates before you travel.

Cannabis Around the World

Outside the U.S., the picture is a patchwork:

  • Legal for adults: Canada and Uruguay allow regulated recreational sales. Germany, Malta and Luxembourg allow adults to possess and grow limited amounts, with access through home grow or non-profit clubs rather than stores.
  • Tolerated or decriminalized: the Netherlands tolerates coffee-shop sales, Spain has private cannabis clubs, and countries like Portugal and Jamaica have decriminalized small amounts. Decriminalized doesn’t mean legal, and tourists can still face fines.

Penalties elsewhere can be severe, so when in doubt, leave it at home.
